Welcome! I am looking forward to a fun and challenging year in Spanish. These are the guidelines and expectations that should be kept as the first pages in your Spanish binder. The last pages of this outline need to be completed and signed by you and your parent/guardian. This will count as your first homework assignment.
Teacher Goals
My goal, is to provide numerous opportunities for you to communicate by means of speaking and writing in Spanish. I also want you to understand what you read and hear. We will achieve these goals as a class by speaking in Spanish during class time, participating in daily class discussions, reading, and listening to authentic sources and introducing a variety of vocabulary and grammar. You will learn to appreciate (hopefully) Spanish-speaking cultures through exposure to music, art and history.
Student Goals
Dedication is an important part in learning a foreign language. You will be expected to participate during class and to demonstrate your understanding and abilities in 3 modes: Interpretive, Interpersonal and Presentational as defined by District, State, and National Standards. Each unit will have an interpersonal speaking assessment.
Interpretive- The ability to listen to or read a text and interpret the meaning
Interpersonal- Active oral or written communication in which the participants negotiate meaning to make sure their message is understood (not prepared ahead of time)
Presentational- Written or oral communication in which the presenter must take into account the impact on the audience since this is a one-way communication with limited opportunity for feedback
Teacher availability
Parents- It is easiest to reach me at the email address listed above. I will do my best to respond within 24 hours.
Students- I am available to help you before school, during Advisement, or after school by appointment. You may also contact me by email if you have questions or concerns. My role as a teacher is to help you, so don’t be afraid to ask!

Homework (Pay extra attention to the information below!!!)
Throughout the year, you will have online homework assignments on the Conjuguemos.com website (we will set up your account during the first few weeks of class) and you will need to have access to a computer and the Internet. If access is not available at home, you will need to complete online homework using the computer labs or school library during Advisement or before/ after school. You will have approximately 2 weeks to complete online assignments by a specific date and time. You can check the assignment board in my room for weekly homework and to ensure you know WHAT is due WHEN. In addition to online assignments, there will be other written homework assigned in the Realidades workbooks that is due the following class period. These assignments must be completed when you enter class. Late work can only be turned in for HALF CREDIT. Late work will not be accepted once we take a test for that unit. YOU MAY NOT TURN IN WORK THE DAY OF AN END OF CHAPTER TEST/ASSESSMENT. It must be the day before.
Absences
It is your responsibility to find out what you missed in class. Please check my board or website calendar. There will be paper copies of missed work in the missing work folder on my cabinet countertop. You receive one extra day to turn in work for each day you were absent. If you miss a test or quiz you will have a week from the school day that you return to make it up. Please schedule a time to make up a test and/or quiz with me. Students may not make up any work from an unexcused absence.
Behavior
Your behavior in class should reflect respect for one another and the teacher as well as
for the learning process. All school rules concerning safety, behavior, and the dress code
policy will be enforced.
Remember:
No food/drinks (water is okay) are allowed in class.
Bathroom breaks:
Breaks are 5 minutes or less per school policy, only one student is allowed out at a time. Please plan to use the restroom/get a drink (or bring a water bottle) before class as you will not be allowed to use the restroom every day during class. You will be allowed to use the restroom a total of 2 times per month, please use your passing time wisely. Restroom breaks are not allowed during the first or last 15 minutes of class.
Cell Phone Policy (PERMISSION ONLY)
Each student will be assigned a number in a cell phone pocket chart holder in alphabetical order. There will be times where your phone will be allowed in class for educational purposes where students will collect phones from the pocket chart. If I did not inform the class that cell phones can be out I have the right to take your cell phone if it is a distraction to myself, you, or other students. The following consequences will be followed if you are caught using electronics at an inappropriate time:
Remember... It is okay to make mistakes in Spanish. I want you to try your best and have fun in class. Let's make this year a great one!
